One of the most important sanctuaries of the Maremma, its name derives from the Latin “Fraxinus excelsior”, the tree venerated by the Nordic people and burnt to ward off evil spirits. The architectural structure presents a large Latin cross plan with three different altars: the high altar with two statues by Domenico Notari from Lugnano in 1700, the one on the right, built in 1596 and dedicated to Our lady of the Assumption and the one of the left, dating back to 1696 dedicated to Saint Silvester. Furthermore, the sanctuary is home to a famous wooden statute of the “Virgin with Child”, thought to have belonged to an artist of the 14th century Pisan school.
