Castello di Sassoforte

Towers and castles | Roccastrada
The castle, which belonged to the Aldobrandeschi family during the Middle Ages, is located on the homonymous massif which dominates the small, built-up centres of Sassofortino and Roccatederighi, and served as a fortification to control the territory. In the first half of the 14th century, the castle passed under the control of Siena which transformed it into a small village. From the 15th century, the castle progressively began to lose importance until it was abandoned and reduced to ruins. To date, it is possible to admire the different medieval remains including the imposing walls which recall the importance of the castle during the Middle Ages.
