Parco Nazionale delle Colline Metallifere

This national park is a vast territory rich in geological sites of considerable scientific importance, rarity, aesthetic and educational value. This represents a connection with the history of mining activities and metal processing which have followed one another in this area for almost three millennia, from the Etruscan period to our days. This history has affected the cultural, sociological and environmental characteristics of the Metalliferous Hills.
The Park offers a multi-themed perspective providing numerous opportunities for visitors. The main theme is rediscovery of the remains of alum, iron, lignite, pyrite and copper mines, but a journey through these lands also gives the opportunity to admire an extraordinary richness of flora and fauna, artistic and architectural remains of various historical periods, from medieval villages to ancient walls, to castles and breathtaking landscapes, including the remains of industrial archaeology such as the old wells.
The Park extends over seven municipalities to the north of the Province of Grosseto: Follonica, Gavorrano, Massa Marittima, Montieri, Monterotondo Marittimo, Roccastrada and Scarlino.
