Le Roste

A fascinating geological site close to the bridge that connects Montieri to Boccheggiano, in which it is possible to admire the red gullies of the Merse river. This site, among the most picturesque of the park, highlights how atmospheric agents can modify the environment over time. Its origin dates to the mining activity, to the working of ‘poor’ mineral, with less than 4% of copper sulphates, responsible for the distinctive red colour. These gullies not only represent a fascinating geological phenomenon but also historical evidence of past mining activities and their impact on the surrounding environment.
