For centuries, its walls were surrounded by greenery, accessible only via poorly maintained paths. The nearby hilly areas were practiced with minimal agriculture, a few olive trees, a small vineyard, and a vegetable garden; while the plain, marshy and used for grazing, remained uncultivated for a long time. Only in the 20th century did the opening of a pyrite mine profoundly change the situation. Today, with the mines now closed, the village offers an oasis of peace and ancient flavors.
