Exhibition "Il Sassetta: A Glimpse into Sienese Late Gothic Art"

From 15/03/2024 to 14/07/2024
"The Municipality of Massa Marittima announces the most significant exhibition event in recent years: in March 2024, a major exhibition dedicated to Stefano di Giovanni, known as Il Sassetta, will be inaugurated at the Museum of San Pietro all'Orto, titled 'Il Sassetta: A Glimpse into Sienese Late Gothic Art.'

The decision was formalized in recent days by the Municipal Council, approving the act that gives the green light to the organization of this cultural event, allowing for a deeper understanding of one of the leading artists of the Sienese Quattrocento. It will be a complex exhibition from an organizational perspective, involving an original production that includes the exhibition of an unpublished work and the production of a catalog.

"It is a cultural operation of absolute importance that will have a national resonance," comments Marcello Giuntini, the mayor of Massa Marittima. "After the major exhibition dedicated to the masterpieces of Ambrogio Lorenzetti that we hosted in 2018, we are preparing to create another significant event that will once again shine the spotlight on Massa Marittima and, together with our city, will promote the entire Maremma."

"It will also be an important showcase to make our small museum known," added Irene Marconi, councilor for Culture and Tourism. "Since 2013, it has been recognized as a Regional Museum of Relevance, and since 2023, it has become part of the National Museum System. The Museum houses important pieces, including a precious testimony of Sassetta's art."

In this regard, similar to the exhibition event on Lorenzetti, this exhibition will revolve around the work already permanently displayed at the Museum of San Pietro all'Orto: Sassetta's Announcing Angel, restored years ago, a small panel that was once placed among the spires of an altarpiece. Other works by the painter will be juxtaposed, such as small figures of saints and fascinating stories from the National Gallery of Siena and the Chigi Saracini Collection. Another "Madonna and Child" from the Museum of the Opera in Siena, restored by Fai di Siena, will also be exhibited, sharing grace and refined elegance with the Molli panel, along with a series of works by other painters and sculptors close to Sassetta to reconstruct the Sienese artistic context of the time.

Visitors will be guided through the exhibited works to grasp Sassetta's refined style, the original function and form of the works, and important aspects related to the commissioning of the paintings through graphic reconstructions and audio traces. These themes will also be presented in specific educational paths designed for school groups of all grade levels.

Art Bonus
To support the event, the municipal administration of Massa Marittima also mobilizes the government's Art Bonus fiscal instrument, targeting donors. Anyone wishing to support the exhibition with a liberal donation can obtain a tax credit equal to 65% of the donated amount. This measure is also cumulative with the regional Art Bonus, which is 20% of the Irap tax credit."
